The Purah Pad in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom provides players with essential survival tools, but the Camera feature remains one of the most useful utilities for cataloging Hyrule. Unlike basic screenshot tools, the in-game camera integrates directly with quest lines and tracking systems. Learning how to operate this function efficiently ensures you can document rare creatures, locate hidden resources, and complete unique side objectives.

Unlocking the Camera in the Depths

To acquire the Camera, players must initiate the Camera Work in the Depths quest given by Josha and Robbie at Lookout Landing. This mission directs Link into the Hyrule Field Chasm to track down Robbie amidst the dangerous gloom. Upon meeting Robbie near a Lightroot, he will activate the Purah Pad's camera feature to help document mysterious statues.

Completing this initial assignment unlocks the ability permanently, allowing you to photograph objects across Hyrule. It also grants access to the Hyrule Compendium, which records crucial data about monsters, materials, and equipment.

Operating the Camera Ability

Accessing the camera is identical to using Link's other primary abilities, such as Ultrahand or Fuse. By holding the L button, you can select the Camera icon from the wheel interface using the right analog stick. Releasing the button switches your perspective into photo mode immediately.

Once active, you can adjust the framing, zoom in or out using the directional buttons, and capture the image by pressing A. The interface displays a colored target box around subject items, signaling whether the entry is new to your compendium.

Taking Selfies and Custom Poses

The camera feature offers additional flexibility beyond simple landscape photography by including a self-portrait mode. Pressing the X button while holding the camera flips the viewfinder to face Link directly. This mode allows players to capture memorable scenes alongside defeated bosses or scenic vistas.

While in selfie mode, moving the left analog stick lets Link strike different expressive poses and weapon stances. You can save up to 64 photos in the Purah Pad album before needing to clear space for new pictures.

Utilizing the Hyrule Compendium and Sensor Upgrades

Capturing clear photos of items and monsters automatically adds detailed profile entries into the Hyrule Compendium. This catalog displays drops, locations, and descriptions for every registered subject in the game. Keeping an updated compendium is vital for players who plan to upgrade armor sets or farm specific crafting materials.

Later in the story, Robbie can upgrade your device with the Sensor+ feature at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. By linking your compendium photos to the Sensor+, the Purah Pad will emit an audio chime whenever you draw close to a targeted item or enemy.
